«Building Trust in our
Societies»
The theme we chose for our third annual Forum
(11-13 October, 2007), «Building Trust In Our
Societies», is a hot topic today.
It has become urgent to answer this call. Our
democratic societies have no future without social
cohesion and without lasting bonds of trust linking
citizens to the system and its institutions. For
political leaders, the media, scientists and business
leaders alike, trust has become a cardinal virtue and
the re-establishment of its legitimacy a crucial
issue.

Today we are adding up one fear after another,
both collective and personal, which is generating a
climate of defiance. We mistrust one and all and even
question what we put on our dinner table. Globalisation
appears to be the source of dysfunction and new wounds.
The spectre of global warming and the degradation of the
environment only add more pressure. Progress also can be
frightening; science can take a nightmarish turn and
biotechnology breach sacred territory and taboos. The
ageing population, the result of longer life spans and
falling birth rates, is becoming a menace to our social
security systems, which are a key factor in social
cohesion. And to add to anxiety, we have identity
crises. Given the waves of migration, how can we
re-establish trust between cultures and communities that
are having trouble living together?
Citizens, consumers and the public are asking
themselves what the future will bring and who and what
they can trust. And yet, we can rejoice in the
growing power of our civil society through its
questions, its initiatives and its actions that are
helping to create alternatives to this lack of trust.
Questions demand answers and there are answers to
be had, not just empty promises. At the Forum we are
going to address corporate loyalty, best practices,
trust as a corporate standard and ecological commitment
as a means of legitimacy. Also on the programme will be
social entrepreneurship, new social networks and the
propagating role played by the internet, projects for
«sustainable» urban centres, tomorrow's green cities,
the establishment of ethical standards for science and
technology and new forms of consumption.
Women are at the heart of these issues.
Reinforcing trust and social cohesion depends on their
full participation at all levels of influence and in all
spheres of activity. If we are rising up to meet
this challenge, it is surely because as women we are
inclined to make a trusting relationship the basis of
all exchange and the primary condition for all
commitments.

A third edition, emphasizing
openness
to the world and generosity
Looking to
Asia Already present through an Asian
delegation at the first edition of the Women’s Forum in
October 2005 in Deauville, a group of women leaders from
South-East Asia are showing an increasing interest in
the Women’s Forum.
Aude de Thuin presented the Women’s Forum during
a successful event on February 1, 2007
on the premises of Soho China in Beijing.
A calendar of activities in Asia has been
established and several events are in the planning
stages.
On 12 June
2007, an event organised in
partnership with the Women’s Forum and Cartier:
«Together for Entrepreneurship» has taken place
in Beijing:

From 11-13 October
2007, during the Women’s
Forum: A delegation of some 50 Asian
participants will be invited to participate in the Forum
in Deauville.
In March 2008, a «Women’s Forum Special Meeting
Day» will be held in Beijing over two days. The
event will feature 350 participants, and around 30
international speakers from among our corporate
partners.
Looking to the US, Germany, the UK,
Spain, Sweden…
Road Shows in each of these countries will take
the form of breakfast debates, meetings with influencial
women, business leaders and the media. These
initiatives show the Women’s Forum's desire to be
present in a number of countries and to present its
concept, founding principles, expertise and the benefits
that participants and partners can glean from the event.
Looking
to emerging countries
The Women’s Forum aims to give women of
responsiblity from emerging countries an important
place, notably those from Africa and Central and South
America. Some 200 women will be invited to the Forum
this year.
Several major innovations
at
Deauville from October 11-13, 2007
A revamped Discovery Hall
The Discovery Hall 2007, a space
for networking and relaxation, will also address the
theme of trust. The revamped space will cover 7
topics: education, design, the environment,
travel, fashion, health and wellbeing («I want to feel
good!») and will also feature a writer's corner. The
area will also have Discovery Corners, those workshops
and discussion areas moderated by renowned artists,
writers, scientists and experts from varied fields who
will debate the chosen themes with the Forum's
participants in an intimate atmosphere. All of these
activities make up the Discovery Programme, a tandem
event exploring an original take on the world around us
and personal experiences. This programme is in great
demand every year at the Forum, and a number of time
slots are dedicated to it each day.
Network
Lounge
This warm and inviting space in the heart of the
Centre International de Deauville was created to
encourage contact between participants of all
nationalities and facilitate moments of exchange, which
are greatly appreciated by all.

The strength of the Women’s Forum
partnerships
Beyond being a one-of-a-kind
international event, after just two years the Women’s
Forum has become a highly attractive «brand». Indeed, a
number of partners have shown their desire to jointly
create projects in partnership or with the Women’s Forum
«label». For the Forum, this is a sure sign of
success, bringing both confidence and a perennial spirit
to the event.
Several tandem projects which
continue to increase
in number are currently in development and will be
communicated during the Women’s Forum in Deauville next
October. These include:
the education, training and hiring of
women, business creation by women, the performance and representation of women in
the corporate world, the talent of tomorrow.
These projects, which are mostly
international, call on the Women's Forum teams as well
as some 15 prestigious partners. These include:
Cartier Women’s Initiative
Awards:
Fostering
the spirit of
enterprise
The creation of the Cartier Women’s
Initiative Awards in Partnership with the Women’s Forum
was officially announced during the second Women’s Forum
for the Economy and Society in October 2006 in
Deauville.
Through a contest format, women from
around the world present their business creation
projects. Five women business creators (one per
continent) are rewarded for their project's innovation,
its viability as well as its impact on the business
community.

Rising Talents
This program developed in partnership with JP
Morgan and with the support of Egon Zehnder aims to
create an international network of 50 talented women
under the age of 35, coming from economic, political and
civil society from all 5 continents, in order to
identify the talents of tomorrow. This long-term program
will take place on an annual basis as of
2007.
The selected candidates will be invited to
participate to the October edition of the Women’s Forum
and will have the opportunity to meet the newly selected
Rising Talents in May of the following year during a
dedicated Rising Talents Forum.
Being identified
and selected as a “Rising Talent” is a fantastic
opportunity to boost one’s professional career and build
a strong and rich network thanks to the social
connections made with their counterparts as well as with
the leading personalities present at the Women’s Forum.
We invite you to suggest to the Women’s Forum
candidates for the Ring Talents Programme by 15 July
2007.

Women for Women’s
Education
The Women’s Forum and
ELLE magazine have partnered to support a major project
this year, «Women for Women’s Education», which favors
the education of women around the world.
In the
context of this joint operation, NGOs are encouraged to
submit an economic insertion program based on women's
education. This appeal for applications was published
in the May and June issues of ELLE in France and in
eight of its international editions: South Africa,
Belgium (two editions), Brazil, China, India, the Middle
East and Russia.
This initiative shows the Forum's desire to
embark on innovative projects with concrete and
exemplary results in favour of women.
These
projects will be sent to the Fondation ELLE (through
July 15, 2007), which will make a preliminary selection
with French association and fellow partner AIDE et
ACTION.
The three NGO finalists will be invited
to participate in the Women’s Forum in October where the
winning project will be awarded a prize of
€100,000.

Devoted
partners actively support
the Women’s Forum
The Women’s Forum partners do not
simply lend their logo to the event; they are totally
comitted to concrete projects that show their desire to
contribute to a new economic and social climate that
takes into account the increasing role of
women.
By being at the heart of a network of some
1,000 experts and international businesses leaders, our
partners clearly show their will to reinforce their
image in terms of social responsibility and diversity.
They benefit from the unique international platform
that the Women's Forum offers to be recognised as
innovators and precursors in these domains both
externally and internally.

Structure
of the Women’s Forum 2007
A new, more international board
structure
The Women’s Forum for the Economy
and Society initially had two Boards, one in France and
one in Belgium. Today the Forum benefits from the work
and support of a Global Council (currently being set up)
made up of women from five continents giving the Board
an international scope, as well as an International
Advisory Board. The Founding Board has an essential
role as consultant; the Women’s Forum works closely with
this entity. These Boards' regular meetings generate
points of view, advice and recommandations on the
positioning of the Women’s Forum, its activities and the
key parts of the October Forum.
Five women joined the International
Advisory Board early 2007:
- Sandrine Devillard, Principal,
McKinsey & Company, France
- Nina Gardner, Director, Strategy
International, Italy
- Julia Harrison, Founder and
Managing Partner, Blueprint Partners, Belgium
- Caroline Mille, Senior
Vice-President Corporate Communication, Groupe France
Télécom, France
- Liz Padmore, Consultant, Padmore
Associates, UK
